CASE STUDY “SAALBUCH”

A “Saalbuch” records the property rights of a manorial system and lists the resulting provision of services. It is an important economic and legal source of the medieval and early modern feudal system. Such historical papers were handmade and written on with ink. To speed up the drying of the ink, the document was sprinkled with quartz sand. The quartz sand then stuck to the ink, preventing it from running off.

With conventional pass-through scanners, the glass elements are damaged by the adhering quartz sand and thus quickly become dull. Therefore, the contactless sceyeX overhead scanner offers an enormous advantage. The often rather fragile papers do not have to be subjected to additional stress. As a result, historical documents composed of fragments are digitised very carefully. With this process, even entire historical books can be digitally preserved in an extremely time- and cost-saving manner.
